This was shown when he told Hikaru to release his emotions instead of being depressed. Despite this, he shows sympathy to the Hizashis if either of them is sad. However, he tends to reserve his friendliness quite often, choosing to be more strict with Hikaru and Hyuga in an effort to make them stronger, not hesitating to yell at them or lecture them. He is a supportive coach for the brothers and is friendly to them. In Surge, Rantaro becomes much wiser, sharing his advice with Hikaru and Hyuga and teaching them the importance of training, resting, and looking out for each other. At one point, he threw a fit when Wakiya stole an entire plate of kabobs meant for the former, leaving him nothing but a single green onion.Īs seen a couple of times in the anime, Rantaro doesn't like it when people call his jacket a cape. A couple of his favorite foods are tacos and meat. Rantaro's greatest fear is revealed to be unicorns, though it is unknown how or where he developed this fear from.
In addition, Rantaro is shown to get along very well with younger children, retroactively foreshadowing his close relationship with his younger brother, Ranjiro. Often times, he is the first to encourage his teammates to do well before a battle and provide moral support whenever they are feeling down. He wants to be seen as a tough guy, but he is actually a big softie underneath it all. Being naturally honest, he displays many of his emotions openly, whether it be happiness, anger, sadness or joy. Rantaro has many similar personality traits to Valt Aoi. Despite this, he is honest and has a strong sense of justice. He can be quite simple-minded and clueless, and is shown to not be very insightful (such as when he was unable to tell that Valt was upset over Shu's shoulder injury and when Ken was feeling lonely at Xander's grandpa's dojo). Rantaro is highly self-confident, often referring to himself as the Head Honcho and is good at sneaking things in and out of their school's strict regulations.

In Surge, he retains his full gakuran attire, but the jacket has a red interior and gold buttons, he wears an orange dress shirt, a blue sash as a belt, and brown dress shoes. When he battles in Burst, he initially placed his comic books around his waistband (In the manga, these are specifically CoroCoro comics).
In Burst and Burst Evolution, his attire consists of a black gakuran jacket slung over his shoulders, akin to a cape, a dark-red tank top underneath, black gakuran trousers, a white sash as a belt, and brown laceless shoes. He wears a bandage on the bridge of his nose, has a habit of keeping an orange and red lollipop in his mouth, and carries a large white paper fan. Rantaro is a tall, comparative to his age, fair-skinned boy, has blonde hair that he wears in a pompadour and brown eyes.
